The Advantages of Telehealth

As we find ourselves in a climate that is as uncertain and it is ever-changing; it can feel almost impossible to schedule anything.

Often when we become overwhelmed, our mental health is the first thing to fall off the priority list as it becomes “all too hard”. However, these are the times where mental health support is more crucial than ever, as it forms the foundation of everything we do.Luckily, access to our services has never been easier, with face-to-face sessions as well as telehealth sessions.

So how do telehealth sessions work? Typically they are a teleconference, where you receive a link to your email which connects you to the session. All you need is a bit of privacy and an internet connection, and you can talk from wherever is convenient (your couch; the office; the car – whatever works!) From there the session is exactly like a regular face-to-face session. Alternatively, we can also offer support over the phone.

I have worked extensively in the telehealth domain over a number of years, with clients ranging from children to adults, and across a range of presentations. Sometimes clients can be apprehensive about trying telehealth, worried that it won’t be “the same” as a face-to-face session. However in my experience telehealth sessions meet two really important needs.

First, telehealth ensures continuity of support (or, if it is your first time, the establishment of support). Continuity is so important for maintaining the gains made in therapy as it allows us to maintain momentum. Second, telehealth takes a lot of the logistical stress out of attending sessions. Can’t leave work? No worries. Kids sick at home? We’ll come straight to your phone. Isolating? No problems. Because lets face it, usually it is during these times that it would be the most beneficial to be able to talk to someone. Third, for new clients making the step into therapy, it can be quite daunting. Telehealth can provide a really lovely way to see what therapy is all about, from the comfort of your own home.

So my take away message this week is: if you are finding it difficult, for whatever reason, to attend a face-to-face session, give one of our telehealth options a go! You might be surprised with how convenient it is!
